New Alzheimer Support Programs in Portland

You don’t have to go it alone. The Alzheimer Society Lanark Leeds Grenville are now offering support groups at Country Roads Community Health Centre, 4319 Cove Road in Portland. 

“It’s your chance to meet people in similar situations,” according to Alzheimer Society Education and Support Coordinator Sean McFadden. “A Caregiver Support Group is offered the second Friday of each month, from 1:30 to 3:30pm at Country Roads with a start date of July 14th, 2023. The program is designed to give caregivers the tools, support and knowledge to care for their loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. The program is of benefit to spouses, children and friends. “The sessions also allow participants to share best practices and gain emotional support. Looking after someone with dementia can be a 24-hour-a-day job. Our support groups are designed to help participants cope better and feel less isolated as they make connections with others facing similar challenges.” Our participants gain a sense of empowerment and control, McFadden said. 

Country Roads Community Health Centre is also host to the “Just For You” program. McFadden notes that the Alzheimer Society has designed this program as a social/supportive group for persons who have Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.  The Caregiver Support Group and “Just For You” programs run simultaneously on the second Friday of each month from 1:30 – 3:30pm. We run both sessions at the same time to allow Caregiver’s some time to gain confidential support and to allow persons with dementia to get some quality social time with others.  The ‘Just For You” group is for people living with dementia who cannot be left alone at home.
